CONGRATULATIONS Wheaton Warrenvile South Boys Varsity Football Team!
Wheaton Warrenville South 28, Lake Zurich 17
CHAMPAIGN -- Despite a big effort from the Lake Zurich defense, Wheaton Warrenville South held on for a 28-17 victory in the Class 7A state championship, their second in two years.
Reilly O'Toole was 14-for-23 for 182 yards and a pair of touchdown passes to Titus Davis (6 catches, 104 yards). Matt Rogers had 13 carries for 88 yards and a pair of touchdown runs, including the back-breaker from 37 yards with 1 minute, 48 seconds left in the game.
The Tigers (14-0) are the fifth undefeated state champion this year. They have won three state titles in the last five years. The win avenged a 2007 title game loss to the Bears.
Jacob Brinlee set a state-title game record with 232 yards rushing on 33 carries. Zach Till and John Mularz each had a rushing TD for the Bears (12-2).
An interception by Casey Ambrust on the Bears' first drive and gave Wheaton South the ball on the 44. On the next play, O'Toole found Davis in the flat for a 44-yard touchdown pass and a 7-0 lead.
